Young person's guide to the orchestra
We'll be reviewing some of our musical instruments by listening to the "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra". We will start this week by listening to the strings family. Watch the two videos below for an introduction to our unit from Ms. Han and also an introduction to the strings family.

Learn: YPG: Strings: MEET THE STRINGS
We will now hear from individual members of the String family. First, we’ll hear from the Violins, then Violas, Cellos and finally the Double Bass. These are the official members of the string family, however for this set of variations, Britten has used the Harp. The harp has strings too, but these are always plucked, never played with a bow. The foot pedals are used to tighten or loosen the strings which change the pitches/notes.
In this listening we will be discussing:
1.) tempo – the speed at which the music is played (slow or fast)
2.) articulation - how short or smooth are the notes

Here’s a great read aloud for you that introduces many instruments of the orchestra. Listen and watch carefully to see if you can find all the string instruments that we’ve learned about. We’ve also attached some visuals and worksheets that you can do as well.
